WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

TERM 1
Year 7 will begin their Spanish course learning how to introduce themselves and practising their pronunciation of a new language with an early focus on phonetics. They will quickly master the alphabet, numbers and colours, then move onto describing themselves, their family and pets. They will also be learning about Hispanic culture and why Spanish is an important world language.

TERM 2
Following on from Term 1, Year 7 will develop their sentence structure, adding in opinions on the themes of school life and free time. They will find out about Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico and how Christmas is celebrated in Spain.

TERM 3
Year 7 will be discovering types of houses which are considered typically Spanish, including those of some eccentric Spanish artists! They will be able to describe where they live and go on an interesting trip to Madrid (via Virtual Reality) to direct each other around the city in Spanish. They will be using the near future and conditional tense to describe their ideal home.

TERM 4
Tapas tasting time… so be ready for the spicy patatas bravas! Year 7 will find out all about Spanish cuisine and get to sample some, having learnt how to order in Spanish.. a very useful future skill.

TERM 5
As we start to think of sunny holidays on Spanish beaches, the students will be exploring the topic of holidays and start using the past tense in Spanish to compare past, present and future travel. They will develop their awareness of Spain as a key tourist magnet and some may even have signed up for the Barcelona trip and get to see for themselves why it is so popular.

TERM 6
In the final term, Year 7 will discuss technology and how it affects their lives. They will continue to practise tenses and opinions in various contexts and get to watch a Spanish movie.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

TERM 1
Students work in the context of meeting and greeting new people. They also talk about how they feel and if they get on with family and friends. They practise buying cinema tickets, accepting and refusing invitations and making excuses. Students use questions to ask about journeys and use ser and estar to describe character and mood. Key skills being developed include: Identifying patterns, explaining adjective agreement, word order, verb endings in different tenses

TERM 2
Year 8 students practise talking about clothes and giving their opinions of them. They look at different styles and eras of fashion while focussing on the imperfect v present tense. They use comparatives and superlatives to discuss different places where you can buy clothes. There will be lots of opportunity for role play.

TERM 3
Students return to an earlier theme but go into more detail saying what they like to do in their free time, saying what music they like and why, going shopping and discussing favourite places to go on holiday. They also describe an event in the past, learning how to narrate using a variety of past tenses.

TERM 4
Theme: Come to Madrid. Students study transport and travelling around Madrid. They plan visits to places in Madrid and a possible future school trip abroad. Students use realia to buy travel tickets and practise talking about a day out in the past. They also revisit an earlier theme: giving simple directions around town, which includes a visit to the VR suite for a virtual trip to Spain’s capital city. (Perhaps not as hot as the real Madrid at this time of the year!)

TERM 5
This term is all about healthy lifestyle and healthy body. Themes include: Illnesses and injuries. At the chemists. Sport and sporting injuries. There is a focus on the use of question words and the impersonal form.

TERM 6
The final term sees students exploring the countries of Latin America and finding out about Spanish- speaking people, Latin American festivals, Music and Dance. We have a go at dancing Zumba to some great Latin tunes and discuss the importance of learning languages. Students also carry out research on the internet. Research and presentation skills are demonstrated through 3 sessions using IT/VR room. Some students will be off to Barcelona to soak up the sun and the culture and practise their Spanish during Aspirations Week.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

TERM 1
Students review and develop an earlier theme,’Mi familia y yo.’ They will be able to describe what they and others look like and define character. Family and friends and Relationships are discussed through photo cards and role play as students get used to the requirements of the new spec GCSE. Skills being focussed on this term include: Grasping nuances in meaning and identifying familiar structures and applying to new situations

TERM 2
Students analyse how young people use technology, discuss the advantages and disadvantages and develop reading strategies. Students will be invited to a Spanish play called ‘La Primera Cita’ which allows them to practise their understanding of key topic vocabulary in an engaging way.

TERM 3
Students will develop the theme of Tiempo Libre. Free time, music and cinema. They will be encouraged to support opinions with a range of language giving reasons and examples in different tenses. Students practise speaking task types at both foundation and higher tier.

TERM 4
Students study the theme of Eating out and food culture in Spain. This term the focus is on developing their use of future time phrases and reflecting on listening strategies.

TERM 5
Students will study the theme of Latin American and Spanish culture and traditions. There is an emphasis on the correct use of the imperfect and preterite tenses in the context of describing fiestas

TERM 6
This term focuses on revision techniques with an emphasis on: Writing and translation practice at higher tier. Understanding exam rubric.

Working with photo cards/role plays through Group Talk Initiative to produce confident speakers of Spanish.

Some students will be putting their Spanish into practice in Barcelona during Aspirations Week.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

TERM 1
Students begin their GCSE exploring the theme of local area, town and home. Skills will involve:

  • Using adjectives to enhance descriptions
  • Recognising key topic words in reading and listening tasks
  • Using verbs which start with a vowel
  • Simplification and paraphrasing
  • Recognition of hidden meanings and being able to infer from higher reading and listening texts.

TERM 2
Students will discuss social issues including Charity/voluntary work, Healthy and unhealthy living, Eating habits and Comparing old and new health habits.

Students are encouraged to vary vocabulary, to add mark winning phrases and to use different tenses accurately. Key skills include:

Using verbal context when listening, using adverbs to enhance sentences and recognising common patterns in Spanish when listening.

There will also be an opportunity to see a play in Spanish called ‘La Primera Cita’ which is created with GCSE students in mind and includes a lot of key topic vocabulary.

TERM 3
Students define and discuss environmental issues such as pollution, recycling and alternative resources. They will analyse problems and come up with solutions. In this term students will focus on: reusing known verbs and phrases and making use of social and cultural context when listening.

TERM 4
Students explore social issues such as homelessness and poverty, evaluating the current situation and creating solutions to problems of social inequality. There is an emphasis on justifying answers and using key phrases for agreeing and disagreeing in a discussion. Students will be preparing their speaking booklets and boosting their confidence for the speaking exams in term 5.

TERM 5
Students describe holiday experiences, express and justify preferences and talk about holiday activities in the perfect tense. This is a popular theme for discussion in the speaking examination which also takes place this term.

There is a focus on: using negatives to improve writing, paraphrasing and expressing opinions using intensifiers.

TERM 6
Students develop their uses of tenses when describing holidays. They are encouraged to apply descriptive and narrative structures to their speaking preparation for Part 3 (using context booklets)Summer series exam prep and performance.

Some students will be going abroad to enjoy a culture-rich visit to Barcelona during Aspirations Week.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

TERM 1
Students will start year 11 studying the theme, ‘My Studies’ in which they discuss life at school and college. They will be using extracts from the higher tier course, where mark winning structures are encouraged. A Foundation and higher tier file is used for vocabulary consolidation and will be tested weekly in a Tuesday morning MFL mentoring session aimed to support and revisit prior learning.  In class they will be focusing on key exam skills including: Recognition of hidden meanings and being able to infer meaning through reading and listening texts.

TERM 2
Students will be studying the theme of Education- post 16. Students will focus on increasing their confidence speaking and will take part in exam style photo card and role play scenarios using current themes. They will be encouraged to use a variety of tenses in their answers and to try and talk for two minutes on each task. 

TERM 3
Students will be studying the theme of Jobs, Career Choices and Ambitions. Students will focus on learning useful higher tier structures and learn to vary vocabulary and language in order to achieve the highest grades. They will also begin recalling earlier themes from Identity and Culture. 

TERM 4
Students will continue reviewing all themes covered over the 2 year course in the context of exam style tasks from AQA website. Students given both higher and extension listening and reading tasks to do from kerboodle.

TERM 5
Students will be preparing for the speaking exam (early May)There will be a review of all themes using AQA revision powerpoints/recap to retain revision worksheets and analysis of past papers. There will be an emphasis on grading and exam criteria so students start thinking from the examiner’s point of view and see how they can maximise their marks. We will be using the kerboodle assessment file on all 4 themes: higher level practice assessment in listening, reading, writing and translation. Students are encouraged to attend the Friday am sessions to supplement their learning and to receive tailored feedback.

Students are set weekly vocabulary to learn and exam questions on Show My Homework. Any students falling behind attend Friday consolidation class.
