WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

The Travel and Tourism sector in the UK and internationally.

TERM 1
Students get to know the locations of the main travel and tourism destinations and gateways in the UK. They are able to locate the capital cities, seaside resorts, cultural and historical towns, areas of outstanding natural beauty, seaports, airports, and main road and rail routes. They also learn how to plan their own journey by road, rail and air.

TERM 2
Students investigate the appeal of UK tourist destinations for different visitor types. They investigate one town or city, one seaside resort and one countryside area. They look at how these destinations appeal to different visitor types, for example, groups of students, families or elderly people.

TERM 3
Students plan two different holidays for different types of visitor. They learn how to put together an itinerary based on customer need. They research accommodation, transport and potential activities appropriate for the type of visitor, and consider how their itinerary could be adapted for a different visitor type.

TERM 4
Students develop an understanding of the travel and tourism sector in the UK and its importance to the UK economy. They learn about the industries and key organisations within the travel and tourism sector.

 TERM 5
Students develop an understanding of the role of consumer technology in the travel and tourism sector. Students learn how to analyse case studies and explain the advantages and disadvantages of services offered by different industries in the travel and tourism sector. They develop a good understanding of all the key terms linked to travel and tourism.

TERM 6
After their Unit 1 exam students get to know the locations of the major travel and tourism destinations and gateways across the world. They will identify major European and non-European destinations, as well as major gateways from around the world. They will also explain four popular air routes across the world.

OTHER INFORMATION

Students develop their research skills and independent learning skills as well as an understanding of how the travel and tourism sector works. In the first three terms, they do internal assessments which receive accreditation towards the BTEC qualification.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING

The Travel and Tourism sector in the UK and internationally, and the impact of customer service.

TERM 1
Students investigate the appeal of international travel and tourism destinations to different types of visitor. Students create a mini brochure that explains the appeal of one European and one worldwide destination to two different visitor types. They research local attractions and accommodation, as well as looking at natural and cultural features.

TERM 2
Students plan two different holidays, one in Europe and one somewhere else in the world. They put together an itinerary and research accommodation, transport and potential activities appropriate for the type of visitor. Students have to explain how their holiday itinerary meets the needs of their visitor type.

TERM 3
Students investigate customer service in the travel and tourism industry. Students will look at different travel and tourism organisations and describe the main aims of customer service. They will also compare the customer service in different organisations, as this will help them evaluate how strong customer service is the different organisations.

 TERM 4
Students explain how different travel and tourism organisations respond to customer needs and exceed their expectations. They then evaluate the success of the different organisations.

 TERM 5
Students compare the impact of excellent and poor customer service on different travel and tourism organisations. They then recommend and justify improvements to poor customer service for a particular organisation.

TERM 6
Students need to complete any resubmission work that is required. All students receive one opportunity to resubmit their assignments.

Throughout Year 11 students do internal assessments which receive accreditation towards the BTEC qualification.
